How to Look Good on Zoom: 5 Tips to Look Great for Your Virtual Meeting

Communities

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at September 17th, 2020

Social distancing measures have resulted in the widespread utilization of Zoom, a video conferencing tool that has allowed people to communicate and collaborate from afar as the ongoing pandemic prevents us from gathering in person. Virtual meetings have become a key part of our new norm. So if you’re wondering how to look good on Zoom, keep reading. Zoom is now the go-to for professional meetings, school lessons, friend and family “get-togethers” and, yes - even Zoom dates. So, chances are you’re spending more time in front of a video camera than ever before.  And chances are you’ve found that it can be a little awkward at times.   However, there are certain things that you can do to look your best on video chat. We’re going over 5 tips to achieve a polished and presentable appearance in your next virtual meeting.

How to Look Good on Zoom: Tips & Tricks

1. Use the “Touch Up My Appearance” Feature

Shoutout to Zoom for helping us out with this one. With its built-in “Touch up my appearance” feature, you can enhance your on-camera appearance without any effort.  This feature enhances your appearance by using a soft-focus, which creates an airbrushed look. The softening of minor imperfections and evening of skin tone gives your face a smooth, glowing look. To activate this feature, open Zoom and click your profile picture in the top right-hand corner. Then select Settings, Video, and check “Touch up my appearance” under “My video”. You’ve now applied an effortless airbrushing on every Zoom call!

2. Find Good Lighting

Lighting may actually be the most significant factor impacting your on-camera appearance.  Natural lighting is the most flattering for your features. So, if you can, set up for your Zoom call in front of a curtained window in a room that gets a good amount of natural light. If this isn’t a viable option, you can work with artificial lighting. LED lights are the best choice - but avoid fluorescent lights, which can be harsh on all skin types and tones. If you own one, the ideal option would be a ring light, which not only casts an even light, but also can illuminate your eyes in a striking way.   You want your light source to come from above or in front of you. Try not to position yourself with your light source behind you since this will cause you to look like a shadowed silhouette. You should also try to avoid having your light source directly to your left or right as well since this will illuminate one side of your face while casting a shadow on the other.

3. Position Your Camera to Capture Your Best Angle

Many people are video calling from laptops resting on tables in front of them with their camera well below eye level. This angle accentuates your chin and nostrils - not always a great look.  The most flattering position for your camera is at, or slightly above, eye-level. You can achieve this angle by stacking several books on the table to boost the height of your laptop camera until it’s in the ideal position.   You also want to avoid getting too “up close and personal” with the camera, maintaining a distance of about two feet or more. (Social distancing takes on a slightly different meaning when it comes to video chat!).

“Best angle” applies to your brow shape, too!

4. Tidy Up Your Environment

Your fellow Zoomers are not only going to take notice of your personal appearance, but they’ll check out your background as well.  The state of your home environment is a reflection upon you, so take a minute before your call to tidy up and make sure that there’s not a visible mess behind you. If you’re on a more informal call and want to have some fun with this, Zoom lets you change your background image, or even create your own!

5. Be a Bit More Generous with Makeup... But Don’t Overdo It!

You may need to apply a tad bit more makeup than usual in order for it to stand out on camera. You don’t want to go overboard with this, though! The camera often causes a washed-out effect, which you can combat by applying some extra bronzer to create some more facial definition. A bit of added lip color, even if it’s just a tinted balm, will translate well on camera too.   You’ll also want to make your eyes pop - and eyelash extensions will most definitely help you achieve this effect. Though you often don’t always need to apply extra mascara to extensions, you can add an oil-free mascara to give them even more “oomph”.
