What Is Microdermabrasion? Process, Benefits, and Post-Treatment Care

Facial, Skin Care

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at August 5th, 2020

Getting wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, and other skin “problems” is just a part of getting older. These things record our experiences throughout life: our days in the sun, the times we spent laughing and smiling, and a scar from that time you fell from having too much fun at summer camp. That being said, it’s understandable that the appearance of aging skin can be a bit distressing. There is a way to lessen the appearance of these wrinkles, fine lines, and more that are painless, simple, and involve no invasive injections or chemicals. That method is called microdermabrasion. So… what is microdermabrasion? Don’t worry: we’ll go over what microdermabrasion is, how it works, and what you can expect from the treatment in this post.  Keep reading to learn the answers to your microdermabrasion questions!

What Is Microdermabrasion and How Does It Work?

For a long and complicated sounding name, microdermabrasion isn’t that complex.  Simply put, microdermabrasion uses a special tool that exfoliates and removes superficial layers of dead skin cells. This can work to smooth the skin, wrinkles, and fine lines while also helping age spots and scarring appear more faded. The entire microdermabrasion process only takes between 15 to 30 minutes! Many add this service onto facial services to give their skin the full treatment. It’s also non-invasive and most find it pain-free. It’s similar — but slightly different from — our NuFace service, which focuses on increasing collagen levels and elastin production. Past clients have described the feeling of microdermabrasion as similar to a cat’s tongue licking your skin. Most find that it feels similar to washing your face with a gritty scrub and feel gentle scrubbing & tugging as the main sensations.

Microdermabrasion Benefits

Because microdermabrasion removes layers of dead skin, it allows the fresh, smooth, and younger looking skin beneath to shine through. People can experience any and/or all of the following benefits from even just one microdermabrasion treatment:
  • Reduction in appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Brighter complexion
  • Reduced scarring
  • Lighter age spots and other areas of hyperpigmentation
  • Even skin tone & texture
While you can see positive results from a single treatment, many find that they get consistent and long-lasting results with multiple treatments over longer periods of time. For those looking to benefit from self care, a single treatment could be all you need! But if you have significant scarring, wrinkles, or other skin issues you want to treat with this technique, multiple treatments over the course of a couple weeks or months can be extremely beneficial.

Think you’re going to want more consistent facials & microdermabrasion appointments to get more results?

Post-Treatment Care

The first 24 hours after your microdermabrasion are the most important in order to the best and healthiest results!  Because layers of dead skin cells are removed to expose fresh skin underneath, your skin will be a bit more sensitive than normal in the day or two after a microdermabrasion treatment. Of particular importance is sun exposure, especially here in the Houston climate with the strong sun and constant heat. Your skin post-microdermabrasion is very sensitive to sun damage, which can lead to burns, skin damage, and wrinkles (the exact thing you wanted to avoid!). In the first 24-48 hours post-treatment, be sure to:
  • Keep your skin cool and calm
  • Use only gentle skincare products (or none at all)
  • Protect yourself from the sun
  • Use sunscreen daily
  • Stay hydrated
Our staff will speak with you about the protocols to follow before and after treatment. They’ll also discuss things to avoid following treatment, including:
  • Do not pick your skin
  • Avoid direct sun exposure
  • Avoid anything that raises your body temperature (hot showers, sauna, steam rooms, exercise, etc) for the first day after treatment
  • Don’t use any exfoliating agent for one week, including anything with AHA, BHA, micro beads, enzymes, or retinol
