4 Houston Charities, Nonprofits, and Programs to Support Right Now

Communities, Featured

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at June 22nd, 2020

Between COVID-19, hurricane season upon us, schools closing for summer, and human rights movements popping up all over the country, there’s no better time than the present for giving back to our local Houston community. Chic Lash Boutique is proud of our roots here in Houston. Most of our clients know that we’re about more than eyelash extensions and lash lifts: we want to help our community thrive even in tough times like these.  We’ve compiled a list of some awesome Houston charities, nonprofits, and programs that could really use support right now (and in the future). We’ll go over how you can support these organizations and what they’ll do for our community. Let’s get started!

1. Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston creates programs and relief for the youth in our community providing mentors, activities, food, academic help, and more.  In response to the pandemic, various drive-thru pantries have been set up for families in need to receive meals. All CDC guidelines are followed with people not needing to get out of their cars at all. Volunteers and staff will place all of the food right into the car. Families can get a day’s worth or up to a week’s worth of nutritious and healthy food for no cost. They also have pre-prepared kids’ meals that require you to show a school ID, bus pass, or other documentation that the child is in school. The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston is also offering other programs & activities to keep families busy during this time. You can donate here or look into signing up as a volunteer for the organization.

2. The Montrose Center

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month where LGBTQ+ members and allies celebrate the diversity of identities, genders, and lives in our awesome Houston community. The Montrose Center of Houston is an LGBT+ center providing health resources, therapy, support, education, and telehealth to those in need. Not only is pride month the perfect time to donate to an organization like this, but it’s also extremely important seeing as members of the LGBT+ community are at higher risk for COVID-19. Providing education and health support during this time is essential for keeping this community safe. The Montrose Center accepts monetary donations along with donations of your time as a volunteer. 3. Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center

It might seem scary to be donating blood at the moment, but, according to the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center in Houston, there’s actually no known risk for either donors or recipients of blood transfusions. And that’s a relief seeing as many hospitals and blood centers like the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center are experiencing a shortage, especially for type O blood. If you’re able to, donating blood could save three lives. The Center is doing everything it can to keep patients safe through social distancing, increased sanitation efforts, spaced out appointments, and more. They’re also testing each and every blood donation for coronavirus antibodies and will get you your results within 3 business days. If you’re able, you can make an appointment to donate blood here. If you can’t donate but still want to help, there are volunteer and monetary support options that you can learn about here.

4. Healthcare for the Homeless Houston

With more than half a million people in the United States struggling with homelessness, this population is extremely vulnerable to coronavirus and its complications.  Not only are they vulnerable and more at risk during this pandemic than other populations, but homeless individuals, in general, are more likely to experience health and mental health problems Less access to healthcare and inability to social distance or “work from home” makes the risk of infection and complications from the infection  Supporting these individuals during some of the most difficult times of their lives is an excellent way to support our community as a whole.  For 20 years, Healthcare for the Homeless is one of the top Houston charities providing essential medical care and healthcare services to Houston’s homeless. They pledge that no one will be turned away. In fact, they state on their website that, “92% of those who received care at HHH had no form of health insurance.” With an increased demand for masks, sanitizer, gowns, gloves, and more, you can donate to Healthcare for the Homeless here.
