I’ve Got Crusty, Flaky Eyebrows… But Still Want Microblading!

Microblading

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at March 20th, 2026

If you’re dealing with what feels like “crusty” skin in the brow area (eyebrow dandruff and dry eyebrows), you’re not alone in the struggle! Seasonal dryness, mismatched skincare products, underlying skin conditions, or even over-exfoliation can all affect the delicate skin around your brows. So, what’s the good news? In many cases, microblading is still possible, but timing and preparation are critical to success.

Why Skin Condition Matters for Microblading

Microblading works by depositing pigment into the upper layers of the skin using fine, hair-like strokes. For the pigment to heal properly and retain its shape, the skin needs to be stable/ hydrated and not in active irritation. When the brow area is flaky and inflamed, a few things can happen:
  • Pigment may not be retained evenly
  • Healing can become patchy or unpredictable
  • The skin may become more sensitive during the procedure
In short, the results you’re hoping for, natural, defined brows, depend heavily on the condition of your skin before the service even begins!

What “Flaky Brows” Might Actually Mean

Not all dryness is created equal. Sometimes what clients describe as “crusty” brows is simply seasonal dryness. Other times, it could be related to:
  • Overuse of retinol or exfoliating skincare
  • Seborrheic dermatitis or eczema
  • Dehydrated skin from weather or indoor heating
  • Product irritation
A professional microblading artist can assess your skin and help determine whether you’re ready or if your brows need a little love/care, and prep first.

What Can Be Done Before Microblading?

The key is prepping the skin for success, and in many cases, microblading isn’t off the table—it just needs to be timed correctly. A Chic Lash client once came in eager for microblading, but we caught noticeable flaking in her brows from winter dryness; the overuse of active skincare products exacerbated this fight against the flakes. Instead of pushing forward, we recommended a short reset: pausing exfoliants, focusing on hydration, and allowing the skin barrier to recover. A few weeks later, her skin was smoother, calmer, and ready!

When to Wait (and Why That’s a Good Thing)

It can be disappointing to delay a service you’re excited about, but with microblading, waiting is often what leads to the best long-term outcome. Rushing the process on compromised skin can lead to uneven results and irritated brows. Taking the time to prepare properly ensures your brows heal cleanly and look exactly the way you envisioned!
