Winter Skincare Tips: Don’t Dry Out This Winter!

Skin Care

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at November 23rd, 2021

As winter approaches, it’s important to stay on top of your skincare routine. It can be a wonderful time to cozy up next to a fire with hot chocolate. Yet, it can also be a time when your skin is at its most vulnerable - no one wants to turn into the grinch battling dry/irritated skin during the winter months! To prevent painful, annoying dryness, here are some tips to keep your skin healthy in the winter.

Take Care of Your Natural Oils

Your skin produces natural oils that keep it protected, healthy, hydrated, and beautiful. To keep the natural oils you already have, take warm showers, not hot showers. We know hot showers on a cold day are wonderful, but they’re very hard on your skin. It would be best if you didn’t take long baths, either. As a general rule, avoid taking too many showers or baths altogether. Contrary to popular belief, water doesn’t keep your skin moisturized; If anything, it removes the moisture you already have, making dryness worse. Don’t take long hot showers.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

It may seem obvious, but you’ll need to consider all the different ways to keep your skin moisturized during the drier and colder months. Aside from moisturizer, consider running a humidifier around your home; also, make sure to drink plenty of water. Your skin is an organ, meaning it processes what you give it. The more water you drink, the better hydrated the organ will be. Use an oil-based moisturizer or deep overnight moisture treatments before you go to bed so the lotions can work their magic while you’re asleep.

Be Aware of Sensitive Skin

If you already have sensitive skin or suffer from conditions like eczema, your skin could be at an even higher risk for irritation and blotchiness during the winter. Use products that are fragrance-free and devoid of harsh ingredients. Since it’s common for lips to chap during the winter, make it a habit to carry lip balm wherever you go. Photosensitivity can also contribute to unhealthy winter skin; thus, always wear sunscreen when you’re headed outdoors. The sun can still cause damage, even during the colder months.

Wear Proper Clothing

It may seem obvious, but proper winter clothing can make or break your skincare routine. For people with sensitive skin, wear clothing that won’t make your skin irritated or tempt you into scratching. Proper clothing, hats, and face coverings that protect your skin and ventilate well are critical for winter outings.
