Is Eyelash Tinting Safe?

Lash Lifting

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at October 5th, 2022

Eyelash tinting is a lesser-known but incredibly effective beauty treatment for people who want the beauty and presence of mascara without having to apply it during their daily beauty routine.   Tinting your lashes is a quick and convenient way to save time; however, some have questions about the safety of lash tinting. Is eyelash tinting a safe process, especially given the eye's sensitivity?  Read our fun and informative blog about eyelash tinting and reassure yourself that lash tinting is nothing to be concerned about!

What is Eyelash Tinting?

Eyelash tinting is dying your eyelashes to darken them and create greater contrast against the other elements of the eye. This beauty treatment is best done by salon professionals who use semi-permanent, safe dyes to darken lashes.  Lash tinting focuses only on the color of your eyelashes, so it won’t necessarily add length or volume to them, but in the end, the lashes have greater definition. Eyelash tinting gives off the impression that you are wearing mascara without actually applying makeup. The effect of eyelash tinting typically lasts for about four weeks.

Why Get Your Eyelashes Tinted?

Eyelash tinting is recommended for people who can’t wear makeup but still want its effect. For example, people allergic or sensitive to makeup or people with busy/hectic schedules. One of the best benefits (if not the greatest) of eyelash tinting is that it saves time by eliminating the mascara element of the daily beauty routine.

How Does Lash Tinting Work?

While lash tinting can be paralleled to hair dyeing, the process of eyelash tinting can be much quicker. Getting your eyelashes tinted typically takes about 15-30 minutes in total, and the semi-permanent dye is applied to the eyelashes for about 10-15 minutes. The excess dye is removed, and the process is complete.

Is Eyelash Tinting Safe?

Eyelash tinting is completely safe when done by a trained professional. You should ensure that your lash artist is certified and that your eyelash salon is credible. Like all beauty treatments, there is a small risk of an allergic reaction to the dye, but this is a rare occurrence. Consult with your lash artists before any treatment begins, and let them know about allergies you may have.  While you can tint your eyelashes yourself, it poses significant and serious safety risks, and it’s not recommended - attempting to tint your lashes yourself is risky because of the area's sensitivity. For instance, the dye can get in your eye, which can cause serious and long-term damage.  Eyelash tinting is not bad for your lashes, but it can dry out your eyelashes. For this reason, your salon artist may recommend serums or other follow-up treatments to put the moisture back into your lashes.
