5 Fall Family Activities in Houston You’ll Love This Season!

Communities

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at October 13th, 2020

Fall is here! We’re ready for beautiful leaves, pumpkin-flavored everything, and fall skincare routines (break out the moisturizer!). The family activities in Houston you can celebrate the season with are endless. While it doesn’t get as cold here as it does in other places, Houstonians definitely get to enjoy a little “chill” in the air (or, at least the lack of the sweltering heat of the Houston climate!).  After heading out and enjoying all of the summer outdoor activities in Houston we went over in a previous blog post, we’ve been itching to put together another list of family activities in Houston — fall style! Without further ado, here are 5 fall family activities that you and the family will love!

1. Head to One of Houston’s Many Farmers Markets!

The fall season is known as the harvest season for a reason. Now’s the time to head over to farmer’s markets to get fresh and locally grown produce, meat, dairy, and, yes, apple cider donuts!  Eating local foods is a great way to support the Houston community. Also, it doesn’t hurt to know that eating locally grown & made food can help the environment by reducing your carbon footprint? Check out Houston Magazine’s awesome list of farmer’s market options here.

2. Enjoy Hiking Trails for Beautiful Views of Fall Foliage

Beautiful landscape views of fiery red, bright orange, and sunshine yellow leaves is one of the most beautiful sights imaginable. And you don’t have to travel to Vermont or Maine to get that, either. You can get gorgeous views of fall foliage right here in Texas! You might need to make it a day trip or a weekend getaway a bit farther North or West to get the great views, but that’s a great way to get out of the house and enjoy our great state! One of our favorites is McKinney Falls State Park, that’s about 2.5 hours outside of Houston. Perfect for a day trip, this beautiful state park boasts miles of hiking trails and plenty of changing trees and beautifully colored foliage to fill your heart with autumnal joy.

Fall climate dries out the leaves… and it also dries out your skin.

3. Visit the Houston Museum of Natural Science

If you need a bit of a break from the outdoors or need something to do on a rainy day, the Houston Museum of Natural Science is the perfect place to go.  This museum is open during the pandemic, but it does require guests over the age of 10 to wear a mask at all times. Reduce your contact with others by buying your tickets for the museum, planetarium, and other activities at the museum ahead of time online.  They’re operating at 25 percent capacity as well to help maintain social distancing guidelines; grab those tickets quickly and you’ll get to enjoy learning about dinosaurs, space, Ancient Egypt, gems & minerals, and more!

4. Go Back In Time with the Texas Renaissance Festival

Experience life as we knew it during the Renaissance with the Texas Renaissance Festival! Running from October 3rd through November 29th, this fun festival lets you and your family dress up as fairies, knights, lords, and princesses or you can simply observe & watch other awesome costumes at this enchanting festival. Snack on turkey legs from Feast of Fowl restaurant or dine like royalty at The King’s Feast! You can also check out artisan crafts like blacksmithing, leather shoppes, handmade pottery, and medieval clothing stores.  Watch trained birds of prey fly above your head, various jesters & bands hoping to make you laugh, and even a heart-pounding battle between armored and armed knights (and it’s real, not staged!) at this fun fall festival.

Want the perfect look for your Renaissance costume?

That’s where we come in. Book an appointment for one of our services today!

5. Get Spooky with the Houston Haunted Drive

Would it be a Houston Halloween without the Houston Haunted House? This year, we’re keeping things safe and distanced with a spooky & scary Haunted Drive! This year is the third annual hosting of the haunted drive, and it’s back and better than ever! From the safety of your car, you and your family can see ghosts, ghouls, and other spooky happenings to really get into the fall spirit!
