From Summer to Fall Skincare: How to Switch Up Your Routine

Skin Care

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at September 23rd, 2020

Fall always seems to come into our lives suddenly — one day we’re headed to the beach for fun in the sun and the next we are pulling out our scarves, drinking pumpkin-flavored things, and thinking about how summer went by so fast. So, have you thought about your fall skincare routine? Before you get caught up in all the fun outdoor activities Houston has to offer during the autumn, we recommend you take a good look at how you're taking care of your skin this fall. Hint: it’s different than your spring, summer, and winter routine!  Each season brings different temperatures, climates, and skincare needs. Let’s look at some fall skincare tips that will help you make the switch from bathing suits to boots effortlessly.

Summer to Fall Skincare - Some Things Never Change!

Something that you should never change as the seasons do is using sunscreen. While the sun and dangerous UV rays are more intense during the spring and summer months, they’re not gone during the fall and winter. Not only does sun exposure affect the appearance of your skin (discoloration, wrinkles, burns, drying, etc), but it can also lead to skin cancer and other issues down the line. Don’t put away that sunscreen just because the summer is over! Continue to use it daily to protect yourself from the strong Houston sun. Many makeup and skincare products contain SPF within them, which can help if you don’t opt for straight-up sunscreen.

Reduce Cleansers & Drying Ingredients

You might remember from our article on summer skincare that we recommend using a cleanser during the summer months to combat the increased sweat and oil that most of us experience thanks to the humid and hot temperatures.  If you struggle with acne or oily skin, light cleansers & acne products can still be applied during the fall. However, for most of us, reducing cleanser use or halting altogether will be the best move during the fall season to avoid excessive dryness. The air in the fall is already much drier than humid summer air, meaning that adding a cleanser to your routine could easily dry out your skin.

Go Heavier with the Moisturizer

Spring and summer skincare should include moisturizers, but we usually recommend that they’re light moisturizers.  As we move into the dry fall season, we recommend switching your moisturizer to a heavier duty option. This will work for both the fall and winter seasons, keeping your skin hydrated and healthy in the face of brisk winds and dry air. If you’re not one to remember to use a moisturizer or you’re looking for a treatment that can give you the same benefits as one, we would highly recommend our Nuface Microcurrent Therapy.  During this treatment, we use a gel infused with moisturizing agents and hyaluronic acid, leaving your skin looking younger and freshly hydrated!

Hydration Is Key!

As you can see from the previous tips, fall skincare is all about keeping your skin hydrated. Hydrated skin usually looks and feels healthier, smoother, and younger!  Along with your moisturizer, start the hydration process by drinking water! If it’s hard for you to drink a lot of water each day, switch it up by drinking tea (try for caffeine-free, as caffeine can dehydrate you!), flavored water, and eating water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables.

Fall Skincare Isn’t Only About the Face

Your skin is the largest organ in the body: it’s much more than just your face!  Be sure to use body lotions, moisturizers, and skin protection products all over the body including the hands, arms, legs, feet, and neck. These areas are often exposed to the drying fall air leading to flaky & itchy dry skin.
