Maintaining Your Physical and Mental Health in Houston: How We Stay Healthy at Our Memorial Location

Announcements

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at January 3rd, 2020

A new year is upon us, which for many of us means a lot of self reflection. What goals do you have for yourself? What habits do you want to start and what habits do you want to let go of? For many people, physical and mental health are at the top of their New Year’s resolutions. According to a recent poll, the two most common New Year's resolutions are eating healthier and getting active But at Chic Lash Boutique, we don’t think that physical and mental health in Houston should stop there! Food and activity are certainly important, but you also want to take care of your skin, your mind, and your soul.  In fact, according to one Harvard Medical School doctor, “there is a pervasive cultural pressure to keep pushing ourselves, to ignore the physical needs of our bodies and the emotional needs of our souls, which invariably leads to chronic stress, burnout, [and] depression.” The takeaway? Mental health, which includes self care, is super important, so don’t be ashamed to make that a priority in your life. Keep reading for our list of places near our Memorial location — without having to travel all over Houston — to nourish your mental health so you can crush 2020 and the years to come.

Chic Lash Boutique

Let’s start with a place very close to our hearts… Chic Lash Boutique!  One of the pillars of the CLB philosophy is to boost self-care through natural and high-quality skincare.  Skin health has been directly connected to overall mental and physical health. This means if your skin is unhealthy, there’s a much bigger risk that both your mental and physical health is also affected.  Chic Lash Boutique offers high quality skincare and aesthetic treatments from Houston’s best lash and skincare artists. We’re proud to use the best and most natural services, products, and supplies to make sure that our clients come in contact with as few unnatural chemicals and products as possible. Our facial services are some of the best for physical and mental health in Houston. Facials can help clear acne, improve skin moisture, remove dead skin, and boost collagen production to tighten and brighten skin.  Facials are especially great for skin health during the winter season. According to our owner Jennifer Ngo, facials, “can also give you a little ‘reset’ and help your skin look refreshed and glowing during the winter when the weather can tend to dull and dampen your skin. Facials can also take care of moisturizing and exfoliating so you don’t have to do it as often at home.” We also constantly update our blog with everything from Houston events to cold weather skin care tips. This will help you keep up with skin health, learn about health trends, and understand what you can do to follow through with your health goals.

BIG Power Yoga

You might recognize this spot from our last Houston health article for our Montrose location. BIG Power Yoga has another location right across the street from our Memorial location, which means you can get the same amazing yoga classes in both the Montrose and the Memorial areas.  BIG Power Yoga specializes in Baptiste yoga, which is a specific type of hot power yoga. And don’t take that word “Power” lightly. BIG Power Yoga is very focused on strength in their poses, which means you’ll get a calorie-burning and muscle-toning workout! Laura Rust, the co-owner of Big Power Yoga, describes the programs and classes as “incredibly challenging. However, this intense physical challenge gives you great cardiovascular and muscle building exercise all in one. According to the American Osteopathic Association, yoga has numerous health benefits, including:
  • Improved flexibility
  • Increased strength and tone
  • Boosted energy
  • Metabolism benefits
  • Weight loss (or maintaining healthy weights)
  • Improved cardiovascular and circulatory health
Yoga also yields mental health benefits as well. BIG Power Yoga in particular is focused on meditation, self-reflection, and fostering a community dedicated to a healthy lifestyle. Studies also show that yoga can improve confidence and decrease feelings of anxiety and depression. Check out the BIG Power Yoga class and program options on their website

Body, Mind & Soul

As we’ve already discussed, mental health has a huge affect on your life. Poor mental health can lead to feelings of sadness, depression, anxiety, and an increased risk of various physical health conditions including increased risk of heart disease, cancer, and more issues. Something many people forget about is spiritual health. One scientific journal defines spiritual health as: “a state of being where an individual is able to deal with day-to-day life in a manner which leads to the realisation of one’s full potential, meaning and purpose of life and happiness from within.” Studies show that a focus on spiritual health is connected to better mental health that, in turn, can improve overall health. And it’s spiritual health that our next healthy Houston location, Body, Mind & Soul, focuses on. Body, Mind & Soul is the largest rock and crystal shop in the Houston area. Crystals are great around the home if you want to create a calming and natural environment. This gorgeous shop also has a large library of books on spirituality, meditation, mindfulness, and more. Meditation CDs and audiobooks are also available alongside professional intuitive energy clearing and reading services, reiki, sound therapy, massage therapy, and more.  See all of their holistic services on their website.

Memorial Wine Cellar

Having a glass of wine in a relaxing environment with a friend is a great way to kick off 2020. Red wine, in particular, contains a high amount of the powerful antioxidant resveratrol, which has a number of health benefits associated with it, including: All of this is in moderation, of course. The CDC recommends 1-2 drinks max per day.  What better place to grab your wine than Memorial Wine Cellar? With an inventory of over 400 wines from all over the world, you’ll definitely find something that you love.  In an interview for JM Magazine, Memorial Wine Cellar co-owner Dwayne Harrison says that, “We are a true wine bar [...] Our goal is to get people out of their comfort zone when it comes to wines, and be surprisingly content with what they have tried.” If you’re ready for a fun and relaxing time drinking delicious wine, check out Memorial Wine Cellar’s website for event and bar info.

Nourish Pet Care

Over two-thirds of American households have pets, and for good reason! Whether it’s a dog, cat, hamster, tarantula, or lizard, studies show that caring for and spending time with a pet is great for both physical and mental health. Researchers have found that pet owners are, on average, happier than those without pets.  Owning a pet has also been linked to better heart health, less stress, lower cholesterol, reduced risk of heart disease, and more. For all that pets give you, you want to give back to them too, right? Look no further than Nourish Pet Care right near our Memorial location. They offer cat boarding services to take care of your furry friend when you’re away in accommodations you might be jealous of yourself (daily love and interaction, nightly tuck-ins, healthy food, toys, and more).  If cats aren’t your thing, don’t fret! They also have a huge pet store with some of the healthiest and most natural pet food options available.  Nourish Pet Care is owned and operated by a Licensed Veterinary Technician with over 23 years of experience in Veterinary Medicine, so you know that the products and services offered are up to snuff. Their focus is only holistic, natural, and healthy options for your pets. If you want that for yourself, why not for man’s best friend? Check out more on their story here.
