Can You “Dye” Your Eyelashes? A Professional's Take on Lash Tinting

Tinting Services

It’s often said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. If that’s true, then the eyelashes are the window treatments (sorry, we couldn't resist!), but our eyes and eyelashes are critical to what makes us beautiful humans.  A Healthline study found that people trusted those that looked them in the eye more than those who avoided their gaze - so we need to take care of eyes and eyelashes! A popular article from  Scientific American states: “The first step to knowing what someone is thinking is to look deeply into their eyes.” Knowing all of this, it’s understandable that you’d want your eyelashes to look good :)  As lash artists, we often hear the question from novices, “Can you dye your eyelashes?” which is why we thought it would be a good opportunity to clarify what “dyeing” eyelashes means as a professional treatment. That treatment, of course, is eyelash tinting.

Eyelash Tinting

What exactly is lash tinting? Eyelash tinting is the process of having your eyelashes color-treated to emphasize their body, presence, and shape. It’s most effective for those with blonde or light-colored eyelashes but can also add depth and color to those with darker eyelashes.  Eyelash tinting will help add some definition to your eyes; the entire process typically takes 10-20 minutes, and the tinting can last about four weeks. Multiple sessions are occasionally recommended. Now, you might be wondering if you can tint your own eyelashes. It’s not recommended; we’ll cover why in the next section.

Safety - Techniques and Chemicals

You may guess that adding various dyes to your eyelashes could be hazardous, especially at home. But, trained lash professionals know which solutions to use and the proper techniques to ensure that your eyelashes look great while protecting your eyes.  Here’s how eyelash tinting works: an eye-safe dye is delicately applied to your eyelashes and eyebrows with a brush by a lash tinting professional. You wait 10-15 minutes while the dye sets. Once that’s finished, the excess dye is removed. Eyelash professionals use special dyes designed for use around the eyes that are much safer than other, generic, hair-dying chemicals.  If you’d like to take the natural route, ask your eyelash tinting professional to use vegetable-based dyes, as these are sustainable and milder than cream-based eyelash tinting dyes.

Leave It to the Pros

If you’re interested in getting your eyelashes tinted, having a professional perform the treatment is strongly recommended. Your vision is too important to leave it up to chance, and applying dye to your own eyelashes leaves too much room for error.
