How To Shower With Eyelash Extensions - Tips from the Professionals

Eyebrow Extensions

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at November 12th, 2021

If it’s your first time getting eyelash extensions, knowing what to do after your appointment and after the lash artist has left your side can be intimidating. As a reminder, extensions are semi-permanent. Unlike strip lashes, extensions can last for several weeks and require light aftercare. “How do I shower with eyelash extensions!?” It’s a common question, and we hear it a lot from our clients, especially those new to the eyelash salon. First of all, yes, you can shower with your eyelash extensions! Ok, we got that out of the way. This article will help you understand the particulars of showering with your new fabulous eyelash extensions and how to keep them looking beautiful!

Getting Eyelash Extensions Wet

Now, you shouldn’t get your eyelashes wet for the first twenty-four hours after your appointment; the bonding agents need time to dry and adhere to your natural lashes. However, since eyelash extensions are waterproof, you can take showers once the initial application phase has passed. Otherwise, your lash artist will let you know if your extensions require a longer wait time than usual.

Keep an Eye on Water Pressure

Forceful water pressure can damage your extensions' retention. Avoid aiming the showerhead directly at your lashes or using high-pressure jets. To protect your extensions, turn around and let the water run off the back of your head. You can also cup water in your hands to gently wash your face.

Avoid Taking Hot, Steamy Showers

Heat and humidity can ruin the integrity of your eyelash extensions; this is because the heat will weaken the bond between your natural lashes and your extensions. Avoiding excessive heat on the lashes is the same reason why you’ll need to stay clear of saunas and tanning booths. When starting your shower, keep an eye on the temperature. Lukewarm showers will keep your extensions intact best.

Don’t Use Goggles

Although It’s important to keep your eyes clean, wearing goggles to protect your eyelash extensions isn’t necessary. In fact, it’s a good idea to clean your extensions regularly and gently. If you fail to clean your lash line, you could develop lash mites. Practice good hygiene by washing your entire lash line, including your extensions, but just exercise extreme caution.

Try Not to Scrub

While we recommend showering with your extensions, try your best not to touch them. If you’re using soap, avoid scraping or rubbing near your extensions. It’s understandable if some dirt and grime have accumulated on your lash line, but you can get rid of it by letting the water run through it gently. Don’t use a loofah or body brush; these scrubbers can snag your lashes and make them fall out prematurely.

Be Careful With Your Towel

When exiting the shower, gently pat dry around the extension area. Avoid your lashes as much as possible, as they may get snagged on the towel’s fibers. To dry your lashes, use a hand-held fan or set your hairdryer to a cool-air setting. Keep it a few inches away from your face to prevent the air from damaging your extensions.
