Treat Yo’ Self! A Few Benefits of Self Care

Insights, What's New

Posted by Jennifer Ngo at July 21st, 2020

Ever since the famous Parks and Recreation episode where the characters go on a “Treat Yo Self” Day, it seems that the self care industry in the United States has exploded.  “Self care” as an industry is estimated to be worth about 10 billion with about 9 out of every 10 Americans participating in some sort of self care. However, self care is more than buying yourself a bath bomb and a new wardrobe. In fact, self care as a concept is about more than buying products. It’s about taking healthy and proactive steps to take care of yourself.  If that involves some facial services or a microblading appointment, great! But, it also means making sure you get a full night's sleep, following a healthy skincare routine, eating a balanced diet (including treats once in a while!), drinking enough water, taking time for your hobbies, and generally paying attention to what your mind and body need. The benefits of self care are varied and impact everything from your physical to your emotional wellbeing. Let’s look at some of those benefits here.

Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Just about half of Americans say that their stress levels have increased greatly over the past five years, and about one-third say that their stress is categorized as “extreme”. Combine that with the millions of people with diagnosed anxiety disorders, and you have a pretty stressed out population. Research into self care practices and activities has revealed a strong correlation between stress relief and practicing self care. Taking time to take care of yourself can significantly reduce feelings of stress and symptoms of anxiety. Especially if your self care involves other healthy habits like participating in an activity that calms you, like a facial or a reiki session, or some sort of physical activity that can release feel-good endorphins in the body.

Looking to feel grounded and relaxed? Want to feel mentally and physically rejuvenated?

A reiki session could be what you’ve been looking for. Book here.

Boost Immune System

Self care activities can improve your overall physical health.  Practicing self care with physical activity, healthy eating, spending time with family and friends, and generally taking care of your physical body (massage, taking a bath or shower, laying down for a nap, eyelash extensions, physical therapy, acupuncture, etc) can all help your body rest, recover, and boost your energy and your immune health. But, as we said before, the benefits you experience will likely depend on the self care activity you choose.  Don’t expect shopping sprees or staying up all night to watch your favorite show to necessarily impact your physical health in positive ways as much as a walk around the block or spending time with loved ones would.

Support and Communication

Humans by nature are social creatures; community support, communication, and interaction are essential for our mental health and our overall survival. COVID-19 has reduced many of our social interactions to a select few individuals, which has been detrimental to many people’s mental & physical health. Finding ways to maintain your social connections and finding ways to interact with others safely is important for self care and overall well being.  We find that many of our clients come to Chic Lash Boutique not only for their eyelash extensions or a reiki session, but also to interact with our staff and speak with their artists who soon become their friends. Many of our clients come to us to voice anything that's on their mind without judgment, knowing that we'll truly listen and support them. What our clients share with us, stays with us! We’re here to support our clients; that’s what the Chic Lash community is all about!

Self Care Is Linked to Self Esteem

When you take care of yourself in any way, whether that’s with a nap or an hour writing in your journal, you’re telling yourself that you’re worth it You’re worth the effort, you’re worth the money to buy yourself something, you’re worth the time it takes to take a nap, a walk, or whatever it is.  This is supported by both anecdotal and scientific evidence. One study looking at MS patients found that those who practiced self care had significant boosts in confidence and self esteem compared to those who didn’t practice self care.  Now, think about your own experiences with self care.  Have you ever had a really bad self esteem day that turned around once you took a shower? After your monthly brow appointment? What about after you had a nutritious breakfast? Taking steps to take care of yourself will make you feel better about yourself overall.
