Winter Is Over! Here Are Our Spring Skincare Tips to Get Your Skin Looking Springtime Fresh

Skin Care

The winter blues are very much so in the past at this point in Houston. The cooler weather has dissipated, the holiday season is long gone, and we’re just starting to get into the hot and humid weather that we’re accustomed to during the spring and summer months. After adjusting your skincare routine to handle the dry and cold fall and winter, you’re going to need to do some more changes as we head into spring. Failing to adjust to a spring skincare routine can lead to breakouts, oiliness, and overall dull skin… which is the last thing you want during the brightest months of the year! In this post, we’re going over some of our top spring skincare tips that will help you look and feel refreshed for spring.

Spring Cleaning for Your Brushes & Beauty Tools

Be honest: when’s the last time you cleaned your brushes and other beauty tools? For the majority of people, it’s either less than once per month or never. Used and dirty makeup brushes can be loaded with various bacterial strains (including the dangerous Staph and E. Coli), fungus, viruses, dead skin cells, dirt, and oils from your skin.  Not only can these things cause breakouts and swelling of the eyes & face, but they can also spread infection and disease, which is something that you definitely want to avoid, especially nowadays. Apply the principles of spring cleaning to your brushes ASAP. You should clean your brushes once every 7-10 days, and even more often than that for brushes that you use very often (like for foundation) or ones you use around sensitive areas like the eyes and mouth. Check out this helpful article to learn more about how exactly to clean your brushes.

Switch Your Moisturizer

The fall and winter are very drying for your skin, which is why many people switch their moisturizer to thicker and heavier duty options. Because our skin naturally retains moisture during warmer months, you don’t need something as heavy duty as you would in the winter. Another thing to note is that during the spring and summer… we get sweaty. No cute way to put that, is there (especially here in Houston). Too much moisturizer or thick moisturizers can compound on this excess sweat & oil production, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.

Don’t Forget to Exfoliate

Winter tends to cause us to have a build-up of dead, dry, and flaky skin. It’s time to come out of your “winter layer”, so to speak, and you can do that with gentle exfoliation of the skin. You can use exfoliating scrubs, mitts, or face washes in order to buff away the duller winter skin to reveal the bright and refreshed springtime skin underneath! Always follow exfoliation with moisturizer, including areas other than your face like your legs, arms, and hands to avoid drying. If possible, look for exfoliation products that contain acids like AHA and BHA. Many professional facial services use products containing these compounds to help to strip away dead skin cells to give you a fresh and smooth look for spring. That being said, getting a professional facial is another great way to shed that top layer while protecting, moisturizing, and brightening your skin all at once with high-quality and professional products.  Chic Lash Boutique has a number of facial options that will be the perfect treat for you once we re-open in a couple of weeks, especially when paired with our reiki service for the ultimate refreshing relaxation.

Protect Your Skin with Sunscreen

Houston climate is notoriously hot, humid, and sunny. Even on cloudy days, the UV rays that make their way through the clouds can cause serious damage to your skin, uneven skin tone, damage, and even eventually lead to cancer. Make sure to use sunscreen that is non-comedogenic to prevent break-outs. That’s why it’s so important to protect your skin with sunscreen every day. Many products like moisturizers, toners, and foundations have SPF or UV protection within that product. Check to see if your products have sun protection in them. If not, break out that sunscreen! Also, because you’re not bundled up anymore like you were in winter, don’t forget to put sunscreen on all of the skin that’s exposed to the sun. In fact, you should get into the habit of applying sunscreen all over since recent studies suggest that UV rays can penetrate through your clothes.
